Here are two new mini-reviews of 24 Day 4 from the Ask Matt and Ask Ausiello columns on tvguide.com.

First is from Ask Matt:

I've recently seen the first three episodes of the upcoming season of 24 (I work for a radio station and got the same advance copy as you, I suppose). I thought they were great. Better than all of last season. I think you should let people know that even though it is entirely a new cast you don't even miss anyone and these new people just dive right in like they have always been there. I know that when you hear about extreme cast changes, people get nervous, but in this case, I think it was the shot in the arm this show needed to get back on top of its game. — Steven R.

Matt:
No argument here. It gets off to a very strong start, with a number of compelling characters and suspenseful tangents to get caught up in. I was particularly impressed by Shohreh Aghdashloo, who was wonderful in last year's dreary snob-hit movie House of Sand and Fog, again playing a mother of foreign extraction but with sinister undercurrents. Also was thrilled that Chloe is back at CTU, grumpy but efficient as ever. I don't want to go into much plot detail (let's let Fox's promos give it all away), but the show does feel reinvigorated. The first three hours went by in a flash. I'm anxious to see more. To answer Anne S., who wrote in to ask, "Can you also tell me if 24 is doomed in its new spot on Mondays?" I can only hope for the best. Raymond's final season will be the toughest competition, but it will be in repeats a lot. I have no doubt the show's fans will find it here.

Ausiello: Yes I have, and I think it's probably the best start 24 has had since Season 1. I was leery about all the cast changes (good-bye Dennis Haysbert, Reiko Aylesworth, Elisha Cuthbert, etc.), but the new blood has reinvigorated the show. Standouts include Alberta Watson as CTU's new take-no-prisoners boss lady, Kim Raver as Jack's latest love, and Shohreh Aghdashloo as a modern-day Mommie Dearest-turned-terrorist. But the best news by far is the emergence of Chloe as a major player at CTU. She's practically running the entire operation this season. It's a much-deserved promotion for Mary Lynn Rajskub, and one I hope Emmy voters take note of.
